Behind the Cork™ - Phebus Torrontés

2025 Phebus Torrentés ($9.99)

The 2025 Phebus Torrontés produced by Bodegas Fabre, an Argentine estate founded in 1996 by Bordeaux native Hervé J. Fabre. Fabre was a pioneer in Argentina’s modern wine movement, arriving in Mendoza with a French winemaking background and a good eye for where to grow the grapes. Fabre was among the first to recognize that Argentina’s extreme high-altitude conditions could led to world-class wines.

While the main estate is anchored in the traditional, arid soils of Luján de Cuyo, the fruit for this specific Torrontés is sourced from the cooler, high-altitude microclimates of the Uco Valley, Mendoza Argentina. Located at more than 3,200 feet above sea level, the Uco Valley offers an ideal climate characterized by intense sunlight and extreme diurnal temperature swings. This dramatic shift slows the ripening process, allowing the finicky Torrontés grape to retain its natural acidity while also developing its floral and tropical aromas.

The 100% Torrontés grapes for this wine were pressed and left in contact with the skins (maceration) for 4 hours to enhance its flavors. It was then fermented in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures to yields its delicate aromas.

This 2025 Phebus Torrontés is pale gold in color with bright aromas of citrus and floral notes. On the palate, this medium-light wine has bright acidity, citrus notes of lime and grapefruit and finishes slightly tart.

Phebus Torrontés is a really nice, refreshing wine that pairs well with foods. It’s widely attainable and very affordable. That makes it a great fit as this week’s Behind the Cork™ Wine of the Week. Cheers!
